120 Questions

  1. Is Assisted Dying lawful in Switzerland?

    Reply
    • Yes. Under Swiss law, assisted dying is lawful if the person who wants assistance to die possesses decision-making capacity and has ‘control’ over his/her death and the motives of those assisting are not selfish.

  2. Has has the Sarco been tested so far?

    Reply
    • Dear Louise,
      Thank you for your questions.
To date the Sarco has been tested over a period of 11+ months using various instrumentation. For ethical reasons, no animals or humans have ever been involved in testing. However Philip Nitschke has experienced the Sarco process while inside the capsule but he wore an oxygen mask (in order not to die before his time). We do not believe that the Sarco is claustrophobic, as it has a huge window and visual access to the outside world. We hope this answers your question.

  3. I am a citizen of India aged 41. Do I need to be a sick person to get assisted dying in Switzerland? and what age do I need to get assisted dying? What visa should I apply get to Switzerland

    Reply
    • Dear Laks,
Under Swiss law a person does not need to sick to get help to die in Switzerland. HOWEVER, and with exception of The Last Resort, a doctor is required to write a prescription for pentobarbital. A doctor is unlikely to risk their medical registration by writing a script for a person who is not sick. Therein lies the dilemma. Swiss clinics usually concern themselves with older people only. TLR cannot comment on visa requirements.

  4. Re. Foreigners – Can you apply to more than one organisation at once?

    Reply
    • Dear Hayden
A foreigner can apply to more than one organisation but this will be a very expensive affair with deposits of CHF4000-5000 required per clinic. Generally speaking, these application fees are non refundable when you are not accepted for an assisted suicide.

  5. I am elderly but healthy. I would like to have an assisted death using the Sarco if I am at some point diagnosed with dementia. But I am worried about timing. If a have mild symptoms, seems like I could be judged to be of sound enough mind to make the decision, but not yet sick enough to be permitted to die. If I wait til my condition has deteriorated enough for me to qualify on the basis of illness, I might not qualify as being of sound enough mind to consent to assisted suicide. What is a good way to handle this?

    Reply
    • Hi Susanne,
While not commenting on specifics, people with early dementia can still get help to die in Switzerland. However, in all cases a mental capacity assessment by a psychiatrist is required. You can have dementia and retain your mental capacity. The tragedy is that one should not leave it so long that capacity is lost, albeit inadvertently.

  6. Are “Pegasos”
    and
    “The Last Resort”
    2 different organizations???
I thought they worked together. Made a Donation to Pegasos.
    I am confused.
    Katharina

    Reply
    • Hi Katharina,
The Last Resort is a new organisation in Switzerland (founded July 2024) that will be offering the Sarco device. Pegasos was founded in 2019 by Ruedi Habegger (the brother of Erika Preisig at Lifecircle). While there were initial plans for the Sarco a) to be called the Pegasos and b) used at Pegasos. Mr Habegger and Dr Philip Nitschke have since gone their separate ways with Habegger taking a set against the Sarco which is free for cost and drug-free.

  7. Please can you tell me how much it costs for a uk citizen to have an assisted death in Switzerland?
    Thank you

    Reply
    • Dear Karen,
The cost of an assisted suicide in Switzerland at one of the traditional clinics is upward of CHF11,000. The Last Resort seeks to offer a free service with the Sarco (although some costs are unavoidable, eg. CHF18 for the nitrogen which is used in the Sarco and around CHF800-2000 for body removal, cremation, ashes. The exact amount depends on the Canton in question). We hope this helps.

  8. When the Sarco be available for dying, and how do we make an application to use it.

    Reply
    • Dear Peter,
The Sarco is available for use now and The Last Resort is continuing its ongoing work with a short-list of 7 listed candidates. TLR expects to be in a position to accept expressions of interest in the coming weeks.

  9. I have 2 types of cancer, but I am enjoying a full and fit life. My question is this: If I prepare everything now that would allow me to take advantage of assisted dying should life become unbearable at some point in the future, will I have to repeat any or all of the administrative work at that time? It could be many years from now. Basically, I would like to arrange everything now even if I don’t need the service for years, or never.

    Reply
    • Dear John
It is advisable to only apply for an assisted suicide in Switzerland when the need arises. This is because the document list is exhaustive and many of these documents have time-sensitive criteria (eg. reissued within the last 6 months). If you apply earlier than needed, you may find that you are doubling your administrative load.

  10. Will Sarco be legalized or not in Switzerland?

    If yes, when?

    Reply
    • Hallo Jane
Despite some misinformation in the media, TLR legal advice is that there are no legal impediments to the use of the Sarco in Switzerland. Sarco has not been banned. This is fake news.

  11. If I intend to end my own life in Switzerland, can I travel to the country on my own or must I have a companion with me?

    Reply
    • Hallo Patrick
Once accepted for an accompanied suicide in Switzerland one can travel alone, or with family and friends. The choice is up to you.

  12. How can someone from America, sign up for assisted dying in Switzerland?

  13. What Swiss medical and legal requirements must be met in advance by persons traveling to Switzerland for aid in dying?

  14. I have Parkinson’s Disease and have no intention of becoming disabled and die a horrible death.
I have no support system. Family, friends or even doctors who have stopped supporting me, not in dying, but providing treatment to help me live my best life now.
I receive $1900 per month and have no other resource for funds.
My need for assistance is not imminent but I would like information about how to end my life when it is time, as determined by me, with no finances or support.

    Reply
    • Dear Elizabeth, thank you for your message. You need to be able to travel to Switzerland and cover the costs of your cremation and death certificate issuance. This is generally CHF1000-2500 depending on the canton. There is the cost of CHF18 for the nitrogen for Sarco. There are no other costs in Switzerland for you we are glad to report.

  15. I’ve always felt (for me) 75 yrs is a good life. I’m 77 in good health have family, friends but beginning to see where this is going.. down hill only. I’m not interested in that particular journey. Is that enuf for lawful end in Switzerland? (Sigh)

    • Dear Judy,
Technically (and legally) you can be helped to die in Switzerland even though you are not sick (only old :-). However, the challenge will always be finding a doctor who is prepared to prescribe pentobarbital to you. The Last Resort may be able to help you as the Sarco is drug free, and does not require a prescription for lethal drugs. That said, one would need a psychiatric assessment all the same.

  16. Just wanted to thank you, Dr Nitschke, for giving us this forum. Most of my immediate questions have been answered above.

    • You are very welcome 🙂

  17. I have several medical conditions, and a DNAR and Advance Directive in the UK. I discussed assisted dying with my Doctor who said in the UK it is very difficult to gain permission ,,,the Practice has to have a joint meeting and it is unlikely permission would be granted . I do not have the courage to commit suicide and would prefer to die with dignity before any of my medical conditions worsen. How do you go about planning for a trip to switzerland please ?

  18. I have applied/paid for Exit’s Swiss Application Assistance Program.
Does TLR offer this type of service?
I have not applied to Pegasos yet.
Is TLR in any way connected to Exit International and if so, how?

    Thank you

    Reply
    • Dear Jeanne, Thank you for your message. TLR is the only organisation that Exit is now working with. If you have a look at the application process you will find it quite simple, and an AAP program is not needed. That said we are always here to help. Just use the Contact Us page on this website. Kind regards Jo

  19. I will travel to Switzerland alone. Exit offers a “bring a friend” service, for a fee, an exit member will meet the member, take them to necessary meetings, then to VAD AND identify the body after death. How are all of these met by TLR? Particularly identifying the body when you are traveling alone.
    Thank you

    Reply
    • Dear Jeanne, Thank you for your message. Exit no longer offers the friend service because Exit no longer works with other groups, only with TLR. A member of the TLR team can meet you at the airport and guide you in all matters in the days leading up to your death. There is no need for a person to ID you posthumously at TLR.

  20. Dr.Nitschke …: I’m ‘with’ Janine M in appreciating, hugely, this chance to ask direct/relevant questions re..: V.A.D. (I was disappointed/very sorry , to say the least ,in Sean being arrested ! ). Is it still possible now, to have the option of asking, when I’ve committed to the V.A.D. to have confirmation from ‘Pegasos’, or “Exit International” as to what will be ideal documents to bring with me. Travelling from Sydney,NSW, it makes sense to know what to bring to have a better chance of having the V.A.D approved. (I see now ,it’s more practical to really be asking all this, much closer to the date I’d be leaving Sydney, for Switzerland !.) The situation/’legalities’ on your ‘Organisation’, seems to be ever changing!? I’m a member of “Exit”…..confident full cooperation/and correct and relevant answers would be provided. (One last one..: is it the best option to just direct any/all relevant questions, to “Exit International” ..”Exit” probably having ALL information we’d need ,before travelling to Switzerland ?) Regards and thanks again. Chris (Membership Number..: …only provide this if it’s helpful in any way !) P.S. Please only reply when time allows..I’d imagine you’re ‘flat chat’ with enquiries, always !!

    Reply
    • Dear Chris, the Apply link is now live on the TLR website at: https://www.thelastresort.ch/support/apply/ This explains the documents one needs. And please note, Exit no longer works with other Swiss groups. Philip remains grateful for your support and goodwill.

  21. I am an advocate of being able to end one’s life with choice and dignity and have left a bequest in my will to “Exit International” Is that still you or will I have to change my bequest?

    Reply
    • Hi Jan, thank you for your message and good will. Yes Exit International is the Australian non-profit oraganisation that created the Sarco. The Sarco project was made possible by bequests from people such as yourself. In the US, Exit has a 501(c)3 non profit which has full tax deductability status. See exitgeneration.org Note – neither of these organisations are directly linked to The Last Resort.

  26. Under a non-medicalized model for VAD, is providing an extensive health and medical history still a requirement for the application process?

    Reply
    • Dear FP, the exact medical details required vary from canton to canton in terms of detail. The short answer is it varies. We hope this helps.

  27. Hi. A follow up to Judy’s question. Can the psychiatrist evaluation be done before paying for the assisted suicide? Also what is the minimum time possible between starting to make arrangements with a Swiss clinic and the date of the procedure. (Asked by psychologically sound 71 year old). Lastly what is the best estimate for when the sarcos will be available? Thank you.

    • Dear John,
These are good questions. Please send us an email so we may reply to you personally.

  28. I’m looking forward to the opening of your online expressions of interest page soon so that I can sign up for your service.
    1. What is the time frame between application and the actual death?
    2. Do you require the same documents as the other Swiss clinics? And do the documents have to be issued within the past 6 months prior to my application?
    3. Where would the Sarco death take place?
    4. Would you post a recorded video of one of the upcoming Sarco deaths after it happened please? Of course, with the consent from all parties involved.
    5. What would be the possibility of failure using the Sarco to die? I just need certainty. Thanks.

    Reply
    • Hello Rosemary, the system will be open any day now. Stand by.
The Sarco is housed in a beautiful location in the Swiss countryside. The timeframe depends on the complexity of the person’s situation. The documents required vary from canton to canton. A video of a death will not be posted as it could be misused by nefarious others. The Sarco has been extensively tested to ensure that it will not fail. We suggest instead that you trust the science.

  29. I’m from the US. I’m 44 years old. I’m mentally competent and deal with chronic pain that I could explain more in depth privately. I have medical records to show this. Would I be able to express interest in this when TLR website is ready for that?

    Reply
    • Dear ND,
The Last Resort fully respects that illness has no age barriers. You should maybe submit your details once the online application process is live in the coming days. We hope this helps.

  30. Many thanks for your response to my previous questions.
You said the documents required vary from canton to canton. Who would decide which canton to be the venue for the death? Thanks

    Reply
    • Hello again, the choice of Canton is a joint decision. If someone owns a house in X Canton and wish to use the Sarco there, TLR will do what we can to make this happen.

  31. Many thanks for your response to my previous questions.
You said the documents required vary from canton to canton. Who would decide which canton to be the venue for the death? Thanks.

    Reply
    • Hi Rosemary, the Canton will be chosen in consultation with TLR.

  32. Once we submit our application with all the required documents, can you explain the next steps?

    Are there further evaluations, etc?

I understand you can greenlight your application if you are successfully accepted. How long would that “greenlight” be good for?

    Reply
    • Dear Steven, once all required documents and your application are submitted, your application will be reviewed and we will be in touch with you. We hope this helps.

  33. What is the time line after arriving in Switzerland ?
Would you have to find accommodation for weeks or months?
Are any assessments done online before arrival?

    Reply
    • Hi Tony,
Most accompanied suicide organisations require the client to arrive a few days before chosen day. So no, not weeks and not months.

  34. I’m from Australia. Would the psychiatric assessment be done in Switzerland? Can arrangements be made for my body to be returned to Australia?

    Reply
    • Dear Jennifer, it is preferred that an initial mental health assessment is conducted by your treating doctor (if you have one). Body repatriation is possible but it is very expensive. This is why most people are cremated.

  35. HI there, I live in South Africa and would like to make use of the Sarco to die. I do not have the finances to go to Switzerland for a peaceful death. The ZAR (South African Rand) is ZAR1.00 = Swiss France 20.98. I will need more than R200,000 plus to go to Switzerland. Is there any possibility that the Sarco will be available in South Africa soon?

    Reply
    • Hi Amanda, thank you for your question. We are sorry the Sarco is not available in Sth Africa. This is because assisted suicide is illegal in your country. Just ask Sean Davison who found that out the hard way.

  36. I’m traveling alone to Switzerland. What does TLR require for identification of body? Thank you

    Reply
    • Dear Jeanne, TLR can offer a friend program to support you from the time of arrival, but no one is required for body ID after you are gone. We hope this helps.

  37. I have been an Exit member since 2015.
I have plans in place to VAD once my affairs are in order possibly early 2025. I have been given the green light but feel very unsettled and insecure since Pegasos and Exit seem to have disagreements or discordance.
I would be willing to go for the Sarco if I could be reassured that my plans for VAD would definitely go ahead.
Effectively I need more personal communication. I feel completely let down since Sean Davison left Exit.

    Reply
    • Hi Andree,
Thank you for your message. As you may know Sean was arrested by the UK police for helping a person go to Pegasos one month over he had left Exit. So we are sorry we have no control over this. Why don’t you complete the application form on TLR and we can take things from there. We hope this helps.

  38. A person with claustrophobia may not be able to use the Sarco, and would have to go the Nembutal way.

What can TLR do for that person ?

Can Exit International offer any assistance at all ?

Or must he/she apply directly to the clinics like Pegasos, Dignitas etc without any guiding help from you ?

    Reply
    • Dear Ralph, thank you for your question. In the past people with claustrophobia have entered the Sarco to try it out. They have not found it restricting due to the huge window that allows a clear view. But it is each to their own for sure. We hope this helps.

  39. Hello, I am very interested in attending your webinar. However the times make it impossible for me to catch it live. Will the webinar be available for viewing afterwards?

  40. Dear TLR
I’m an 81 year old dual Swiss / Australian citizen residing in Sydney and member of Exit International.
I stay with my close family who live near Geneva every year.
I would like to know if the Sarco could be used in Suisse romande.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Margaret, nice to hear from you. If you are interested in using the Sarco at your family home, in principle, this can be arranged. We hope this helps.

  41. I’m a 91 year old man from the US with severe balance problems. When I arrive i in Switzerland (location?) is there a representative from Last Resort who can meet me at the airport to accompany me to prearranged lodging where I will be staying prior to leaving this world. Since there is “no free lunch” I’m prepared to pay for this service..

    Reply
    • Dear Thomas, a representative from TLR can certainly meet you at the airport and accompany you to lodgings. That is no problem. And there is no charge or this add-on. We hope this helps.

  42. Hi–so delighted you are coming into existence. I have two questions: 1) In Albuquerque, Nurse Practitioners assume many of the responsibilities and schedules of MDs. Will NPs be acceptable, or will the law require MDs specifically? 2) Will members of The Last Resort receive priority attention?
    Thank you.

    Reply
    • Hi Morton, Thank you for your question however we are not sure what you are asking. The main role of a doctor as far as The Last Resort is concerned is for the mental health assessments. A nurse practitioner cannot undertake this task we are sorry. We hope this answers your question.

  43. Could you please verify that the cost of seeking your service is only CHF18 for the nitrogen + additional costs ~ CHF 800-2000 for body removal, cremation, ashes (as stated in your answer to Karen Roberts).

So, you do not charge admin/application fees at all for your service?

In the best case of scenario I only would have to pay you/Last Resort CHF 818 ?

    Reply
    • Hi Gell,
As we explain on the FAQs, the main cost is CHF18 for the nitrogen. You would incur other costs for body removal and cremation. However this is organised directly with the Canton and not with TLR (and we advise on this). There is no other cost for using the Sarco at The Last Resort. This is because our operating model relies on donations rather than the one-size-fits-all, user-pays model which tends to discriminate against people who do not have the means to pay for the fundamental human right of a good death.

  44. The costs for VAD at Pegasos/Switzerland costs approx CHF 10,000 which includes drugs (Nembutal) consultation, paperwork, removal of body, cremation/ashes etc.
How is it possible that you can offer the same service for a fraction of the price
( see your answer to: Karen Roberts on July 29, 2024 at 8:21 am) ? I am confused about such a huge difference in costs.

    Reply
    • Dear Sonya, thank you for your question. The operating model of The Last Resort is that our costs are underwritten by donations, from people who want, and can afford, to give. This is why there is no direct charge. Note – as we state on the FAQs, body removal and cremation are costs of around CHF1400 but this is organised directly with the Canton, and not with TLR. We hope this answers your question as to why we believe a peaceful death should not cost an arm and 2 legs…

  45. In the application, you inquire as to “when”. The choices include an unspecified date sometime in the future. Aside from probably having to redo the gathering of documents etc, is there any reason not to fill out the application now?

Thank you, thank you for your good work and tenacity.

    Reply
    • Hello Lesley, thank you for your question. In general it is best to apply close to the time that you think you will need the service. This saves everyone extra running around. We hope this helps.

  46. I understand that, ideally, it is best to apply close to the time that I think i will need the service. Including TLR’s administration works before and after I arrive in Switzerland, and the requirement of the canton where my death will take place, would you advise the estimated time (weeks/months) between my application and my death please? I want to incorporate this time frame in my own preparation.
After receiving TLR’s green light, how much time would I have to wrap up my affairs before travelling to Switzerland? Thanks.

    Reply
    • Dear Rosemary, a few months lead time is more than sufficient. We hope this helps.

  47. I’m a member of Exit, do I also need to be a member of TLR to be eligible to use your service? Thanks.

    Reply
    • Dear Rosemary, you do not need to be a member of TLR to apply for an accompanied death. However, it is nice if you choose to support our aims/ objectives all the same 🙂

  48. Do you have someone who can help with filling in the application form?

    Reply
    • Hi Jan, yes we can help you to complete the application free of charge. Just send us an email about the sections you have trouble or issues with. Thank you.

  49. Thank you for such a quick response. It is such a relief to know that. Should I direct my email to this address or is there another address?

  50. Ive had a stroke so mobility is an issue. I dont need nursing but would need a travel companion and have no family to do this. Can this be obtained ffom your organization (for a fee of course)im trying to figure out options. Im afraid of failure or would attempt at home where it would be much easier. Thank you

    Reply
    • Dear Cindy, thank you for your question and we are sorry to hear about the impact of your stroke. As you may know, The Last Resort works with Exit International. There are many lovely people in the Exit community around the world whom we are sure would assist you to make the trip (if you do not have friends or family who are able or willing). When the time draws closer, please let us know and we can facilitate some introductions. We hope this helps.

  51. In the application instructions, it mentions an Advance Directives Form to be completed. Can the form be completed and submitted to the TLR website to be kept on file with my other application information even though I may not yet choose to use TLR services for another 5+ years?

    Reply
    • Hi Robin
Thank you for your question. Generally speaking, the further in advance one’s advance directive is dated, the less relevant it is. This is because you may have changed your mind on certain facts in the interim. We strongly recommend this task is not completed until you are about to travel (as it relates to treatment in Switzerland). You can, of course, have another AD that applies to your home jurisdiction.

  52. Will I still be able to donate my organs after dying in a Sarco? Will the liquid nitrogen used in a Sarco damage the organs?

    Reply
    • Hello Rosemary, organ donation is not possible with the Sarco at the current time. We are sorry. We hope this will change in the future.

  53. Hi! I have some additional questions about the process before uploading the medical information and ID to the application. Would it be possible to email with someone or chat? I live outside of Switzerland so email is possibly best.

In my younger years, I never thought I would consider anything like this but I would like to thank you and your team for your work and tireless research endeavors.

I read through the website and it seems like this is truly a humane option for those whose pain/distress/symptoms are no longer tolerable. Quality of the days you live is so important. There is a massive difference between thriving and surviving. Barring a miracle, for many this gap can be too wide to overcome in this lifetime.

Life is so complex, you never know what you’ll be given to handle … but they say death and taxes get us all. At least we may have a say in one of these things. lol

I have watched many documentaries and interviews around your device and similar companies. The ethics for both sides is really fascinating but it seems like it doesn’t fully matter what a textbook states – it should be based off of lived experiences and available options (most severe/rare diseases do not have adequate treatments).

While it’s controversial for many, I am still glad there are options that are dignified and (fully?) pain free. I’m sure it’s a choice most never imagine making when their life begins but it’s a choice that should be honored all the same. This is especially true for people who have been suffering the medically unimaginable for prolonged periods. Medicine has a place in this world but it can also prolong the inevitable well past a viable, developed future.

There are much more devastating ordeals in this life than death.

Sometimes our hearts are ready to go home to their final resting place but the body hasn’t fully caught up yet.

I hope that peace, comfort, joy and strength be with you all in whatever stage of life you are in at this present time. 🙂

  54. I don’t speak English. Can I use a translator?

    • Hello,
This very much depends on the language. We can work with German, Italian and English at the current time.

  55. Many thanks for the introductory webinar. I enjoyed it in its entirety. It was highly informative and even cheerful. I am looking forward to attending the second webinar in November.
In the first webinar, I believe Fiona said TLR required that a participant’s family be informed. Does TLR require family to be informed prior to or after the procedure? Why does family have to be informed? Is that a legal requirement, or only TLR policy? What if I don’t want my family informed?Requiring one’s family to be informed can risk confidentiality. Can that requirement be waived?

    Reply
    • Dear Peter
It is always best that one’s family is informed so there are no nasty aftershocks. You may be aware of this case: Daily Mail
It is TLR’s intention to avoid this type of situation, that is why we ask. Even if the family is told once you are in Switzerland. We hope this helps.

  56. Two questions please:
    1. Do you know yet which cantons will accept the use of Sarco? Since Switzerland is so beautiful just about everyplace, when my time comes I would like to choose a canton already known for making the process easy and, hopefully, not very expensive for cremation.
    2. I have rather bad arthritis in my fingers and especially my thumbs. Do you think this could have a negative impact when it comes to pushing “the button”?

    p.s. THANK YOU for existing

    Reply
    • Dear Susan
Thank you for your message. If you have access to private property (eg. you own a house in Switzerland) then please contact us and tell us the Canton in question. We can then take it from there. Re your arthritis, not at all. The button is very simple and easy to push.

    • Dear Susan, you use a VPN great. TLR also uses a VPN. If you use a protonmail address great also. You are covered in terms of your privacy.

  58. Trying to get your doctor to write a letter about having mental capacity would be near impossible. Can TLR organise someone in Switzerland to do this if you get the green light? I thought the SARCO was going to have an A.I. assessment fitted.

    • Hi Marie, thank you for your question. To the contrary this is very possible and people are doing this. It’s good to ask the question, especially if you have not yet done an advance directive. This is a good safeguard for you to have in any case. We hope this helps.

  59. Hello everyone…and thank-you for your wonderful work.
I have a question about the Psychiactric assesment. I know you say it should preferably be done by treating doctor.
But what if a person is not being treated for anything.,and is just getting older. Also if it is a group practice the doctors come and go and you do not really know who you would see.
Also would the doctor know what the assesment is for?
even if you do not know them?
Can a Psychiatric assesment be paid for privately? or done in Switzerland?
    Thank so much in advance
    Regards
    Sandra

  60. Greetings,

Is there a specific type of capacity assessment needed to qualify for The Last Resort assisted dying?

I live in Canada and there are a number of different professionals that are licenced to provide a capacity assessment such as a social worker, psychologist or nurse.

So my question is does the capacity assessment need to be be completed only by a psychiatrist?

    • Hi Max,
This is a question best asked to your doctor/ psychologist or Psychiatrist. That said we are putting together a fact sheet to assist with this.
